Beer Goggles #8 - Idiot or Idiom
Pick your poison.
Idioms can be a lot of fun and a great way to inject some humour and pithiness into a conversation.
I enjoy sprinkling them into my correspondence. Sometimes as a little flourish to help hammer home the point I'm making, and sometimes as a vague and cryptic response for when I don’t know what else to say.
Although some have become so common and overused that they are now cliche and boring, it is always a joy to come across some new or even rare idioms to add to my repertoire. I’ve known people who are sharp as a tack and can always be relied upon to provide the perfect idiom for the context no matter what.
Something only possible because every context has its own idiom. It does not matter which point of view you take, there will always been an aphorism to match. In some ways each idiom has its own anti-idiom that means the opposite. I quite enjoy it when I find a pair (a complete set) and try to use them both in the same conversation. While my friend or colleague is busy pondering whether many hands make light work or too many cooks spoil the broth, I have a quiet chuckle to myself.
I encourage you to try the same with your own favourite pair of idioms and watch the ensuing confusion and unraveling of arguments. Or don’t, it doesn't bother me. After all you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink.
